A 42-year-old local man is in custody following a Monday afternoon pursuit that began on a snowmobile and ended with the seizure of a significant quantity of fentanyl, cocaine, and methamphetamine.
Anishinabek Police Service officers were conducting a general patrol in Sagamok Anishnawbek on Feb. 2 when they spotted a man on a snow machine who was known to be wanted for breaching a release order.
The man drove the snowmobile onto a property on Sagamok Road. Officers chased him on foot and caught the man a short time later. They placed him under arrest without further incident.
During the arrest, the suspect informed officers that he was carrying illicit substances. A search uncovered approximately 48 grams of various forms of cocaine and crack, along with 19.4 grams of suspected dark yellow fentanyl and 43 grams of suspected crystal methamphetamine. In addition to the drugs, police recovered a pocket knife, a collapsible baton, a digital scale, and $1,045 in Canadian currency.
The man now faces 14 criminal charges, including two counts of possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking involving cocaine and three counts involving opioids. He is also charged with possession of methamphetamine, five counts of failing to comply with a release order, possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000, and operating a vehicle while prohibited.
The 42-year-old was remanded into custody following his arrest. The investigation remains ongoing.
