A Guelph man is in custody following a violent incident on Saturday morning that left a resident fleeing his own home for safety.

Guelph Police were called to an apartment building near the intersection of Woolwich Street and Speedvale Avenue at approximately 11:30 a.m. on February 7, 2026.

The victim reported that he had been asleep when he was suddenly awakened by his friend grabbing his neck. The man was reportedly brandishing a large kitchen knife and making threats before using the weapon to slash and damage the victim’s bed.

The victim managed to escape the unit and hide within the building to call for help. Upon arriving at the scene, officers located and arrested a 38-year-old man. During a search following the arrest, police discovered a baggie containing suspected crystal methamphetamine.

The accused has been charged with assault with a weapon, assault, uttering threats, mischief under $5,000, and possession of a controlled substance. He was held in custody over the weekend and is scheduled for a bail hearing today, February 9, 2026.
