A Guelph woman in her 80s has been defrauded of nearly $15,000 after sophisticated fraudsters convinced her to hand over her physical banking cards.

The scam began on Monday when the woman received a call from someone claiming to be from Rogers, offering a reduced rate for services. During the call, the woman provided her bank card numbers and PINs.

Just hours later, the woman received a second call—this time from someone claiming to be from TD Bank, warning her that her card had been compromised.

The scammer then convinced the senior to allow a man to attend her south-end residence and collect her debit and credit cards.

Shortly after the man left with her cards, the woman received a fraud alert text from TD about someone attempting a $9,000 charge on her credit card.

The woman and her daughter immediately went to the bank, where they discovered that her debit card had already been used to withdraw more than $14,900 in a series of transactions.

Police say the investigation is ongoing.
