A 41-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly smashing a stolen SUV into a house after nearly running over two Winnipeg police officers.
The incident began just before 2 a.m. Tuesday in North Saint Boniface. Officers spotted a white Honda Pilot missing its front license plate and followed it into a parking lot on Provencher Boulevard. When the officers got out of their car to speak with the driver, the man allegedly sped away aggressively, nearly hitting both of them.
He raced westbound on Provencher to get away. A short time later, residents on Dollard Boulevard called police after the SUV slammed into their home. The crash caused major damage to the house, but the people inside were not injured.
Officers found the man just after 3 a.m. at a hospital on Tache Avenue, where he was seeking treatment for injuries from the crash.
The man faces charges of attacking an officer with a weapon, dangerous driving, property damage over $5,000, having stolen property over $5,000, and failing to follow release conditions. He remains in jail.
