A 73-year-old Guelph man is facing charges after allegedly stealing nearly $14,000 from his former father-in-law.
Concerns about the man using his power of attorney to take money from his ex-father-in-law, who is in his 90s, first surfaced in the summer of 2024.
But at the time, the man did not want to press charges against his daughter’s ex-husband.
In July 2024, a Guelph Police officer spoke to the 73-year-old and warned him to stop taking money from the elderly man’s account. Since that warning, nearly $14,000 more was transferred out.
Police arrested the man on Tuesday. He is charged with theft over $5,000, possessing proceeds of crime, and theft by a person holding power of attorney.
He is scheduled to appear in court on February 6.
